Do they further break down the term ‘spam’ into real spam
(unsolicited, bulk email advertising) and viruses/trojans?

"The Internet" is a global phenomenon. A country-by-country breakdown of
spam traffic means very little when users can use proxies or servers in
countries other than where they actually reside. Personally, I’d like to
see it broken down by:
a) Spam coming from purchased ISP accounts
b) Spam coming from email injection on vulnerable online web forms
c) Spam coming from zombie computers unbeknownst by their actual onwers
d) Spammers by country of residence (rather than country of spam origin)

The more important question in my view is *why* all that spam? Do
people actually buy that shit? Now there is a frightening thought!

Yeah, the zombies is where they send it _from_, but the perpetrators are
the guys in Boca, using those spambot nets. The zombies themselves do
not originate the spam, they only relay it based on instructions
received from the spammers.

I wonder how much of that is because U.S. hosting is cheap, and/or there are a
lot of clueless idiots with unprotected computers here?
For instance – how many of those are using U.S. hosting/web mail because they
can’t find a $2/mo with no setup in their own country? They don’t care if they
get barred by the hosting company – they’ve already sent their spam and moved on.

We USians have more clueless idiots using cable and DSL than the rest of
the planet.
My cable company (RoadRunner) floods the TV with ads about "download
music fast!" and "free anti-virus software" but they never mention
firewalls. Not that the clue-impaired would understand…

Not sure what you mean here. Are you talking about the spammers’ web
sites? Heh, a lot of those I attempt to track down are on Chinese web
servers. And the Chinese don’t care.

No, a lot of them will get a $2/mo. web site because it comes with an email
server. They can spam 100′s of thousands of people in a short while before they
get shut down.
They don’t even need to upload a web site.

By the same token, how many from China are actually Chinese?
